Well, I haven't played any of the games, but I did see the movie, which I will say wasn't that bad. I have seen my friend play Silent Hill 4: The Room, which seemed pretty interesting, but the puzzles and combat do look frustrating. I was also following along with Silent Hill: Shattered Memories for Wii, which seemed like a great idea with the interactive puzzles and no combat, but the no combat proved to be dumb, since that meant there was no sense of danger in certain spots of the game. However, I really can't wait for Silent Hill: Downpour for PS3 and Xbox 360 to come out.

I have finished Silent Hill, followed by 3, and 4: The Room. Later, I got 2 for the PC.
Silent Hill is truly amazing. Overrated? never. It deserves all the applauses. It's brilliant in its making. If you are fed up with FEAR 2, Doom 3, Bioshock 2, and the games of the like. Worry not, Silent Hill is here to save the day.
Silent Hill, is what I can say, is a very twisted, gritty and grungy; every element of fear is incorporated in this game in an amazing manner. Yes, I did play Resident Evil way before I started playing Silent Hill. And I assure you, Silent Hill beats RE in the horror department.
If you want to experience the true Videogame horror, then select non but SH.
Each SH game is unique, with their own twist and story plot.
Playing the game in a higher difficulty might be truly vexing for the new comers. But it surely will satisfy the hardcore SH fans.
What I like about the game is that you do not wear a heavy shield and armored with heavy machine guns, instead you are playing your every-day man in the twisted realms. Health items aren't aplenty, ammos are scarce, and finding your way through the game might a bit challenging, and of course, all the horror and gore that's moving in the game is satisfactory.
You buy a spicy potato chips, and expect the chips to be as hot as you expect, but unfortunately, not as you as expected. You buy another brand, and that bran do deliver the spiciness you want. The same can be said for SH compared to other games. You want the spice(horror), then have your daily dose of SH.
I highly recommend it. But warning has to be issued: It's not for the faint-hearted.
