The Wii U is a lost cause at the moment. There are still games that make getting one worth it but since Nintendo has already announced a new console it's safe to say that it's going to be pushed into a corner slowly. Also, bashing other consoles or saying that they're not good won't get people to buy a Wii U, or even consider it.
As a little note to add on the side, I read a survey a little while back and it showed that folks bought each console for very different reasons. With the Xbox One it's the branding (which isn't surprising), with the PS4 it's power, and with the Wii U it's fun. A lot of people like to get into a dick measuring contest when it comes to their consoles and the Wii U is just too humble compared to the other two consoles. That doesn't mean it's a bad console, it's a great console, but that's how people feel about it. Plus, I think it's obvious that people prefer portable gaming when it comes to Nintendo.
Some sales info to glare at: http://www.vgchartz.com/ (There is a bit of bias in that chart when you look at the 3DS and PS4 sales)
That aside, I do want one, but like with all of the latest consoles out right now I can't afford them.

Nintendo has basically only revealed they're developing their next console; details are scarce atm and they've said they're not going to say much about it until next year. Frankly, I don't see the new console being released earlier than Q4 2017 - which puts Nintendo on par with an average console life-span of 5 years. Not as long as recent consoles' lifespans, but not terrible. And that still gives the Wii U another 2.5 years of life (so it's about halfway through atm).
That aside, I can generally see why people don't want a Wii U; The XBOne and the PS4 offer a vastly different experience than the Wii U does. I love both of these types of game styles, but I concede Nintendo's style isn't for everyone, even if they're great games and should be recognized as such. I think it's a shame that the Wii U is shrugged off by the majority of "hardcore" gamers.
As it is, I'm very happy with my Wii U (generally happier than I was with my Wii), but all I can do is enjoy the time it has left. And for what it's worth, I do think a new console release to "catch up" to the XBOne and PS4 will do a lot of good for Nintendo.

They need to compete with the current market. Wii U simply does not do that. The Wii U has been a massive marketing misstep and they've decided to make a new system rather than fix it.
Yes, you can play Nintendo games on it.
No, that's not a good enough reason to get one.

I'm sorry, but I'm not down with the whole "Games don't sell consoles, hardware sells consoles." philosophy in gaming today. If this were honestly the case then competition between most Sega and Nintendo consoles would have ended with Sega winning. Wii had plenty of great games. Its best games were, in my honest opinion, better than the best games on the 360 and the PS3. And the same statement still holds true with the Wii U and PS3/4 and Xboned/360. People have claimed time and time again that the "death" of the Wii U was inevitable or that it was a failure, but it's still getting even better.
