For years now, Australians have been denied games which featured blood, gore, and heavy violence. All that will now change as the Australian government has announced plans to introduce an R18+ rating for video games, which is the equivalent of the ESRB’s M rating. Games such as Mortal Kombat and Left 4 Dead 2 had met controversy in Australia because they did not qualify for the Australian Classification Board’s 15+ rating, which was the highest rating available prior to this announcement.

All of Australia’s censorship ministers had agreed to introduce the new rating last month except for the New South Whales representative, who had abstained from voting. Minister for Justice Brendan O’ Connor had announced that the New South Whales Attorney-General has given his in-principle support for the new rating as of yesterday.

“I am delighted that NSW has decided to support what is not just a practical public policy, but a very popular policy,” Mr. O’Connor said.“The introduction of an R18+ classification for computer games will provide better advice to parents and help prevent children and teenagers from accessing unsuitable material.”
