For whatever reason I've been really wanting to do something of a Pokemon-styled role play lately. I've been brainstorming a lot of ways to do it, but I'm not even sure if it's a good idea at all.

Here's my thinking so far:

Instead of having it follow the games, everyone who would join would be brought together for some reason. Everyone would be able to start with a single "starter" pokemon in its first form. Without wanting to restrict things too much, this would be open to basically any "common" pokemon from a wide variety of types. The ones off limits would obviously be legendaries and pseudo legendaries.

The roleplay would function rather similarly to the manga/comics of pokemon where you'd have more unique characters occupying a world while there's a plot going on in the background. You'd be send in to aid in the stopping of said plot. What plot is, however, I have no clue.

You'd only be allowed to have three pokemon with you at any time, and you'd be allowed to go out to hunt for and catch pokemon as you wish. How they'd be captured, and battles, would be a simplified dice roll mechanic currently being utilized.

Your storage would allow for up to a handful of extra pokemon, since this wouldn't necessarily be about your characters catching them all. It would be more focused on building a small team of well-trained pokemon to help down the evil empire team plasma-rocket-aqua-whatever.

Like I said, I have the wanting to make a unique adventure in the world of pokemon, but I'm not entirely sure how interesting it would be in execution. Open to any and all suggestions while knowing full well this is rather unlikely to get off the ground.

Snorlax + whatever pokemon are smart enough to work with me

I'm ready to kick butt.

I will probably be interested in this once you've formed a plot and stuff.

You know I'd be in no matter what.

I do have a question, though, related to Lex' post. If he opted to start with a Snorlax, would he be forced to begin with a Munchlax? If so, how would said Munchlax evolve? Would there be a behind-the-scenes friendship thing or would it just be given a level to reach?

UM. But yeah. I'm in regardless how lame it may or may not be.

The plot I'm brainstorming is that it takes place in a completely different region (hopefully without a shitty name) from the others. In this place, you'd be enrolled in a school so to speak that teaches you the ins and outs of battling and "advanced" pokemon concepts. How to become a breeder, researcher, competitive battler, police force, and so on that will work alongside Pokemon.

As such, you'd have been given a pokemon to start with that you've had with you since you enrolled in the school about a year ago (it would be a two year "trade" school). You're coming up on graduation from it when you get word you've been drafted by the regional police force to form a counter task force against a group of "terrorists" (for lack of a better word) that are causing mayhem all throughout the region.

So your graduation comes a bit early and you are allowed to set out into the world to try and make a difference. From there you have complete freedom to either go and actively pursue the enemy faction or do basically whatever you want. Gyms aren't established in this region, so there's no official Pokemon League for you to challenge for.

That said, there will be NPCs you meet with very strong pokemon that are friends and foes along the way.

You'd be funded by the task force even if you don't go along with them (as a means of plot convention) so you'd have your storage space and a good smattering of pokéballs and cash for potions and healing items (if people want to really manage an inventory).

The main plot will likely focus around Mewtwo in some way or form for this first "act" (unsure if there would be any acts to follow if it is finished, but Mewtwo is fascinating in and of itself).

It would take place in a world where none of the pokemon games are canon (since their canon is muddled and all over the place) so it would be a totally clean slate with which to work.

All 649 pokemon would be considered canon in as far as being known about, but much less is known about the Legendary Pokemon. They are, in fact, just that - legends.

I would devise a basic map like you'd see in the games and populate each route with a smattering of different pokemon you could wander out and attempt to catch. Battles would function a lot less turn based and more like actual roleplays so you can set up combos and so on and use the environment to your advantage if possible.

In response to questions:

Evolution with stones/trading would likely not exist. They'd be either level/plot based. Hidden friendship values can be easily coerced by player characters so it renders that pretty moot. I'd want people to actually enjoy themselves instead of thinking of this as an RPG where they need to level up and whatnot. If Lex wanted to start with a Snorlax he'd be more than able to, I'd feel. If he didn't mind starting with a Munchlax, then I'd rather that happen. Evolving is more fun, I feel.

and no, you don't really have to start with a pokemon if you don't want to. I'd really want this to be about having fun and exploring the world and having a unique adventure even though the starting point is contrived for plot convenience.

and yes, doubles of pokemon is allowed. More than one person can have a Charmander/Bulbasaur/what have you aside from if it's a Legendary Pokemon, which I doubt anyone will actually get.

How contrived can a back story be?

How contrived can a back story be?

I know you mentioned your OC is tied to a legendary pokemon, and something like that, I feel, would actually be alright as long as they aren't the offspring of such a creature. If it's like DNA mixing/genetic modifications/etc that would actually sort of fit into the plot tangentially so it would be allowed.

The only back stories I will absolutely not stand are basically Mary/Gary Stu characters. Everything else, within reason, I think would be okay. I don't expect everyone to make the same blank slate generic "I wanna be a pokemon master!" type guy. Variety of people and personalities make things really fun, like NL is right now.

So basically, as long as the back story is logical and within relative reason, i don't have problems with it.

Just to say this for the heck of it. Even though doubles are allowed.

Dibs on Shroomish. :D

It was a hard choice, but I decided that he is the best one for the job. Yes.

Actually, I've decided to not start with Snorlax. But hopefully you'll let me bump into one.

I think I'll be more a background character in this RP than really one you'll see often. I'm content to be sorta quiet for a while, actually, despite my spiked interest in RPs starting back with Shimmering Sphere. Probably just be comic relief or something.

That being said, dibs on Gastly.

Alright, I think there may be enough interest in this, maybe, to start things off or at least toss up an OoC.

Hm, my character wouldn't be in a training academy, but she could still meet up with the rest of the trainers. Is that all right?

I concluded that magnemite would be an interesting starter, so i looked it up more. ON evolutions, to get a magnezone from magneton you have to level up in chargestone cave? Thoughts? and magnemite is fine as long as I make a reason for it no?
