Internet Speed

I remember about 6 years ago I was getting between 5-10 Mbps download. Was paying 49.99 a month for that.
As of today, I'm getting 50 Mbps download for paying the same amount. So my speed definitely went much higher without a cost increase.
Cool thing is I'm getting more then 50 Mbps, with a wired connection the most I've gotten is 65 Mbps. So it's pretty nice. Upload is suppose to only be 25 Mbps but I've reached near 40. Same company by the way. Just switched from Verizons normal plan to their FiOS plan.
I could get 75 Mbps for 10 dollars more a month, but I really don't see the benefit for the price. 50 gets me what I need done and with only two people ever using Internet at once, it really doesn't get slowed down at all so it's pretty nice.
What about you guys? How is it for all of you?
My Current Results just to add. Using Wireless so it's slower then it should be if I was wired but still not too bad.

I'm thinking about moving just so I can have internet speeds that aren't garbage. Last fall I thought it was just because our cable modem wasn't DOCSIS 3.0 (It was 1.0, lolol) and bought a new one to replace it, only to find that I had wasted quite a bit of money on a new modem and router.
And this, my friends, is why I have to tether and use my phone's 4G to play XIV. Yesterday, while downloading the patch, my download speed ranged from 0.19Mbps to 0.31Mbps.

That's just... well I don't even know what to say about it honestly. I don't understand how in the hell you could ever possibly use that at all >_o That kind of speed is so unheard of in this day and age anymore...

This is from my room, where I experience regular connection breaks. D; It'd probably be better downstairs but this is really more than good enough.o.o My speeds would usually be ~17 or so before I got the new FiOS router. I had an old one, before the whole Quantum speeds kicked in. And its wireless range was shit, out in my living room I'd get maybe 3-4 which is only 25 feet away from it. With the new one, I get the same speed nearly anywhere in my house, so thats nice. I just have a shitty wireless card on my compute so I can't get the full speed. Kains laptop gets speeds of 45-55. Same room, same testing site, nothing running on laptops at all. So yea. With a wired connection I get 50-65 depending. So yea. I rarely ever use that high of speed though. My downloads do a nice 4 mbs >.> Can usually get a GB downloaded in under 5 minutes. Which is really awesome.

This is mine.

DSL? Do your parents just not have the money to pay for FiOS or is it not available where you are? Only reason I ask is that when I switched from their DSL package to their FiOS package, it only cost me a slight bit more. So didn't know if prices were different for you or if not available.

Both. Comcast XFinity internet is available in our area though.

So I messed around with some router settings and got this going for me.
However, this is a bit misleading. My speed was around 5 Mb/s before this but I need to upgrade some hardware because my speed should actually be around 100 Mb/s or at least that's what my family is currently paying for =x

This is in the closest room in the house to the modem (my bedroom). Technically, there's a closer one, but it's for my sis when she comes back from class, and I can't really get any closer with a desktop.
I'm sure we get better connection than this when someone heads for the bathroom with a laptop, though.

You said your family was paying for around 100 Mbps. Try messing with your wireless (or wired) ethernet adapter. Change the setting for "speed & duplex" from "Auto Negotiation" to "1.0 Gbps Full Duplex" or whatever the corresponding setting for your interface is and see if that increases your speed. Also see if you can upgrade your router's antennae if it has them and learn about signal boosting and radio transmitter power, and things like repeaters. The latter is more hardcore stuff but here's an article: http://compnetworkin...ef_repeater.htm
And here we go. New router doing work :v
Also try what this guy did, as stated in his last paragraph with the Wifi Analyzer to see if there are better channels for your adapter to tune into: http://www.amazon.co...ore=electronics
By AC technology do you mean "Alternating Current" or the IEEE 802.11ac wireless standard? Because the former is for electricity and the latter is for wireless internet speed and pretty fast, supporting upwards of 1 gigabit connections. Wireless AC adapters cost quite a bit too, I'd think - ac is a pretty new standard. Some info here: http://lifehacker.co...my-wi-fi-faster
Spoiler
Also, for everyone who posted in this thread, could you post how much you're paying for your internet speeds and what your network consists of? That is, modem -> router -> ethernet adapter.
I'm considering buying each one and I've decided on these, along with Comcast XFinity Blast!
Modem: ARRIS / Motorola SurfBoard SB6141 DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem ~$75.07
Router: ASUS RT-N66U Dual-Band Wireless-N900 Gigabit Router ~$129.94
Adapter: TP-LINK TL-WDN4800 Dual Band Wireless N900 PCI Express Adapter ~$39.99
Antennas: Super Power Supply® 3 x 9dBi 2.4GHz 5GHz Dual Band WiFi RP-SMA Antenna style 2 ~$17.98 - getting these omnidirectional 9dBi antennas for the router to increase the signal range and strength. I could put them on the wireless adapters but if I put them on the router it can reach all the adapters instead of just one getting the benefits.
Here's the list of internet-only plans from Comcast in my area. There's also a $500 installation cost for getting XFinity into the house and all that:
Blast! used to be only 50 Mbps and was already a good deal so it's cool that Comcast doubled it, making it even more of a good deal compared to Performance, which is 4 times slower but still costs a little more than half of Blast!. ISPs do that these days. I think it's Google Fiber's fault but I'm happy about it. After 12 months, regular charges apply, which is $76.95 a month max which isn't that bad for 105 Mbps down, though it sorta sucks that the up is limited to 5 Mbps for Comcast (maybe not for the business internet) but it's still better than my current 0.12 Mbps up from Verizon.
Total could be up to $839.93, depending on the installation cost. Some have said it could be $100, with $500 being the max it could be. After that it should be just $76.95/month for the internet.

updated because our old isp was worse than dial-up.
Isp is Charter Communications, and I think we pay $30 a month, because my roomies are cheap. I actually had that modem you linked to (or one similar), Waker, but when our ISP changed they brought in their own modem. I'm not sure what our router is, but it was just a cheap $50 linksys iirc.

updated because our old isp was worse than dial-up.Yeap, that's a lot faster than in the AT&T post. Everybody's internet is officially faster than mine. Also, if you traded the exact router for a cheap one, then you may have gotten a bad deal since the SurfBoard SB6141 supports up to 343 Mbps down/131 Mbps up... but when you're switching ISPs it's common to change the modem too. Kinda like how you change license plates with new cars, but not really. You can keep the old one but it's a hassle to have to tell the old ISP that you're using the same modem with another ISP, etc.

How did it feel to get 22.73 times faster internet for the first time?
