Now, these two articles are merely examples of the current state of the industry. The first one is speculation but the second one is backed by facts. With iOS, Android and F2P PC gaming coming into full swing, can devs really risk making console games when it might mean a loss for them instead?

overreacting.

However, gaming software sales also fell 25% to $432.6 million.

That's silly.

Notable Games:
- Arkham City
- Battlefield 3
- Dark Souls (kind of?)
- Rage
- Crysis (xbox port)

Compared to 2012's October of:
- RE 6
- Dishonored
- MoH Warfighter (Bombed)
- Ass Creed 3

Of course sales are lower.

Perhaps this will illustrate my point more.

11 consecutive months. Is 2012 just a bad year for gaming?

It could just be that people are sitting and waiting on next-gen consoles. I don't see these next gen consoles not hitting the markets (xbox/playstation) but I do think that has a hand in how things are shaping up. Console prices have been getting lowered and all that as well, and console sales tend to dry up near the end of a "generation" so...

I dunno. it could be a bad year or ios/phone/ftp/casual gaming could really be getting a foot in the door and changing the industry. Hard to tell.

Compare the games released in 2011 to those in 2012. I really don't remember many big market games coming out this year. Halo 4 and CoD BO2 notwithstanding, since they're not factored in, yet.

Last year had bigger games. And you're looking at the industry as a whole. How many individual games were released this year that resulted in a loss for the company who produced them?
